American Southeast

The American Southeast

in my Life

My love for the American Southeast traces to a very formative year I spent as an 11- year- old growing up in Warner Robins, Georgia. To be able to spend most of the year comfortably out- of- doors has always held overwhelming appeal for me. I continue to make frequent trips to the southeastern Atlantic states. Our family has taken to spending our annual holidays at various locations in North- Central Florida, where we are familiar with almost every backroad.

When I am unable to be in the South, I console myself in my own backyard, where I have made numerous plantings in an effort to capture the ambiance of warmer climes.

I maintain a casual interest in the Conflict of 1861-65, and try as best I can to keep abreast of new books on the War and biographies about some of the personalities who were involved. As so many of the battles of that unfortunate episode occured in our region, our family has grown up taking many daytrips to the battle sites and associated museums.

More recently, I have developed an interest in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Spanish activities in the American Southeast. Two particular themes interest me: (1) The system of Franciscan missions established along the SE Coast and the "Camino Real" stretching across Northern Florida, and (2) The attempt by the Jesuits in 1570 to establish a mission in "Ajacan", near what is now Yorktown, VA.
