Lab Facilities

The laboratory of Dr. Harvey in the Coastal Chemistry Building (now known as the Bernie Fowler Laboratory Building) of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory is fully equipped for study of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and other organic compounds. Major equipment includes:

  1. An Iatroscan Mark-V TLC-FID analyzer for lipid class analysis.
  2. Two capillary gas chromatographs (Hewlett Packard 5890a and 6890) with autosamplers and two complete data systems for signal collection and processing.
  3. Two mass spectrometer system (Hewlett Packard 5973N and Hewlett Packard 5989a) with the ability for high mass in EI and CI (both positive and negative modes) for structural analysis of organic molecules.
  4. A particle-beam interface for the HP5989a which allows structural confirmation by LC-MS for non-volatile and labile components.also
  5. Two Waters HPLC systems with UV-VIS and Fluorescence Detectors, autosamplers, dedicated data
  6. systems (Millennium), and a Varex Laser-light scattering detector is also present for protein and lipid analysis.
  7. A Savant Speed-Vac vacuum concentrator.
  8. Two Amicon ultrafiltration units (DC101 and CHR2S) are available for dissolved material concentration and molecular weight fractionation, respectively.
