Professional Experiences

Invited EPA Lecture

Dr. Lisa Wainger was an invited speaker in the US EPA Ecological Research Lecture Series, Program Leadership Seminar in July 2007. At the request of the National Program Director for Ecology, she spoke about her work developing a new framework for mapping and valuing ecosystem goods and services. Dr. Wainger has been developing methods to objectively measure the relative value of ecosystem goods and services to support natural resource management and evaluate tradeoffs. Dr. Wainger has also been advising US EPA managers on how to incorporate concepts of ecosystem service benefits into future research. That research aims to improve risk assessment of the natural processes that produce human benefits such as health protection and recreational opportunities.

Research Projects

Comparing cost, risk and benefit tradeoffs for invasives management under uncertainty: Cheatgrass case study

Developed decision support tools to assist managers in treating invasive species by allowing them to evaluate risks of invasion and costs and benefits of management options in terms of improvements in ecosystem services. Managed all facets of the multi-investigator project and conducted workshops and interviews with restoration practitioners, researchers and managers to design a tool responsive to potential user needs. Conducted a statistical evaluation of a database of treatment spending and success of outcomes to characterize costs and probability of successful treatment as a function of treatment applied and site and location characteristics. Innovatively combined landscape ecology techniques and economic principles to assess benefits for multiple ecosystem services using indicators of ecoservice value. (USDA Economic Research Service)

Risk-Based Decision Support System for Managing Coastal Systems Exposed to Multiple Stressors

Developed economic benefit and risk analyses that were linked to statistical and process-based models of aquatic community condition to compare alternate management activities such as implementation of agricultural and urban best management practices. Developing methods to assess comparability of point source & non-point source nutrient trades within a watershed using a case study within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Integrated numerous data sources and refined methods for cost estimation techniques. (NOAA, Coastal Oceans Program)

Environmental Economic Analysis of Dredged Material Placement Options in the Chesapeake Bay

Using GIS-based analysis to examine costs, risks and benefits of using dredged material in Bay island restoration projects. Produced summary of current understanding of heterogeneity of aquatic habitat structure and risks to production of ecosystem services derived from the Chesapeake Bay including commercial and recreational fisheries, recreational boating, support of local businesses, habitat for rare species and protection of land and property. Developed new methods to characterize social impacts by evaluating important changes in views weighted by sensitivity of viewers. Used projections of sea level rise to evaluate risk to future streams of benefits from wetland restoration. (Maryland Port Administration).

GIS Data Center: Development and Analysis to Evaluate Ecological Effects on Aquatic Systems

Managed the UMCES-CBL GIS lab which, over 4 years, provided GIS maps and analyses to the Bay Environmental Working Group for use in rating dredged material placement projects for their ability to 1) minimize harm to Chesapeake Bay living resources such as oysters and SAV and recreational and commercial uses of in-water and near-shore resources; and 2) for prioritizing sites for wetland restoration. The lab has created and documented an extensive database of publicly available and privately-held data related to water quality, physical environment, habitat quality for land and water species, and human use of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. (Maryland Port Administration).
