The following is a list of databases to which UMCES subscribes. This includes indexes, abstracts, reference tools, and electronic journal packages.

Many of these databases can be accessed via Research Port. If you are on site you may login using the "Local Login" button. If you are off-site, use your barcode and last name. If you use your barcode and last name, the initial templates for hold/recall and interlibrary loans will be filled in for you.

    Coverage: varies. Indexes 3,100+ scholarly journals covering the social sciences, humanities, education and more. Includes full-text for over 1,000 journals. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • Access Science
    Coverage: 8th edition plus updates. Search 7,000 articles, 115,000 definitions, and biographies of more than 1,200 key scientists in the online version the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • ACS Electronic Journals
    Coverage: 1998 - present. Full-text of all journals published by the American Chemical Society.

  • ArticleFirst
    Coverage: 1990 - present. Indexes journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture. Now Includes ContentsFirst.

  • ASFA: Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts
    Coverage: 1978 - present. Primary indexing and abstracting service for the marine science literature, including quite a few Chemistry titles. Includes ASFA Biological Sceinces & Living Resources; ASFA Ocean Technology, Policy & Non-living Resources; ASFA Aquatic Pollution & Environmental Quality; ASFA Aquaculture; ASFA Marine Biotechnology.

  • Books in Print with Reviews
    Coverage: current. (a.k.a. BIP) Information on books published and distributed in the U.S. Over 1.6 million titles including books currently in print, forthcoming books six months in advance of their publication, and books-out-of-print since 1979. Now via EBSCOhost.

  • Britannica Online
    Coverage: current. The entire Encyclopedia Britannica plus internet links and Britannica Internet Guide (Britannica.com).

  • Business Source Premier
    Coverage: 1990 - present. Full-text of nearly 1,400 scholarly business journals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, and international business. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • CINAHL
    Coverage: 1982 - present. Indexes/abstracts nursing and allied health literature. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • Clinical Reference Systems
    Coverage: . Full-text of essays covering major health related subjects, including adult health, behavioral health, cardiology, pediatric health, senior health, women's health and sports medicine. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • Conference Papers Index
    Coverage: 1982 - present. Provides citations to papers and poster sessions presented at major scientific meetings around the world. Emphasises life, environmental, and aquatic sciences, as well as some physics, engineering and materials science.

  • ECO (Electronic Collections Online)
    Coverage: 1995 - present. Over 100 searchable, full-text journals in many different fields.

  • Ecology Abstracts
    Coverage: 1982 - present. Focuses on how organisms of all kinds interact with their environments and with other organisms. Included are relevant papers on evolutionary biology, economics, and systems analysis as they relate to ecosystems or the environment.

  • EIS: Digests of Environmental Impact Statements
    Coverage: 1985 - present. Provides indexing and detailed abstracts for all environmental impact statements issued by the federal government each year. EIS extracts key issues, project descriptions, legal mandates, positive impact and negative consequences.

  • Environmental Engineering Abstracts
    Coverage: 1990 - present. Covers the world literature pertaining to technological and engineering aspects of air and water quality, environmental safety, and energy production.

  • ERIC (EBSCO)
    Coverage: 1966 - present. Indexes Current Journals in Education (CIJE) and Resources in Education (RIE). Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • FactSearch
    Coverage: varies. A specialized database of full-text statistical statements on current social, economic, political, health, and environmental issues and public policy topics, excerpted from more than 1,100 mainstream and alternative serial sources such as the Christian Science Monitor, the Congressional Record, and Australian, British and Canadian Parliamentary Debates.

  • GPO Monthly Catalog
    Coverage: 1976 - present. Indexes government publications issued by the Government Printing Office since July 1976.

  • Health Source Plus
    Coverage: varies. Searchable full-text for nearly 270 journals and abstracts and indexing for over 430 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • History Universe (African American File)
    Coverage: . Full-text of Major federal legislation, U.S. Supreme Court cases, Manuscript materials, Reference articles, and Photographs pertaining to African American history. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • JSTOR
    Coverage: varies. Electronic archive of core journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Includes complete runs of journals with full-text of all articles published prior to the most current five years.

  • MasterFile FullText
    Coverage: varies. Indexes 3,100+ magazines covering general subjects. Includes full-text for over 1,000 journals.

  • Medline - Ebsco
    Coverage: 1966 - present. Indexes/abstracts more than 3,200 journals from the biomedical field.

  • Medline - FirstSearch
    Coverage: 1965 - present. Indexes/abstracts more than 3,200 journals from the biomedical field.

  • Medline - Free Version (PubMed)
    Coverage: 1966 - present. Indexes/abstracts more than 3,200 journals from the biomedical field. Free online version includes Lonesome Doc document delivery service, PubMed and Internet Grateful Med.

  • NetFirst
    Coverage: current. Bibliographic citations including abstracts, subject headings, and classification codes for web sites.

  • netLibrary
    Coverage: Varies. A collection of E-books covering specifically chosen by Maryland Academic Libraries. Partially funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • Oceanic Abstracts
    Coverage: varies. More information forthcoming

  • Oxford English Dictionary
    Coverage: 2nd and New Editions. The OED describes English as it is today, but also records the history and development of the language through descriptive techniques and quotations. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • PapersFirst
    Coverage: 1993 - present. Papers included in every congress, conference, exposition, workshop, symposium, and meeting received at The British Library.

  • Pollution Abstracts
    Coverage: 1981 - present. Indexes/abstracts pollution literature from conference proceedings and journals. Includes coverage of scientific research and government policies relating to atmosphere, emissions, mathematical models, effects, and environmental action.

  • ProceedingsFirst
    Coverage: 1993 - present. Citations of every congress, symposium, conference, exposition, workshop and meeting received at The British Library.

  • Project Muse (Hopkins titles)
    Coverage: varies. Searchable full-text of over 110 journals in the humanities and social sciences. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • Risk Abstracts
    Coverage: 1990 - present. Indexes/abstracts literature on risk arising from industrial, technological, environmental, and other sources, with an emphasis on assessment and risk management. The journal includes occasional articles; multidisciplinary coverage.

  • Science Citation Index
    Coverage: info coming soon. Indexes more than 5,700 major journals across 164 scientific disciplines, with all cited references captured. Includes Current Contents. Available via the Web of Science.

  • Social Sciences Citation Index
    Coverage: info coming soon. Indexes more than 1,725 journals spanning 50 disciplines, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals. Includes Current Contents. Available via the Web of Science.

  • Toxline
    Coverage: 1994 - present. Indexes/abstracts all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and mutagens and teratogens. This version does not contain information from CAS, BIOSIS, or International Pharmaceutical Abstracts.

  • Union List of Periodicals
    Coverage: current. Holdings for journals and other covered items among OCLC member libraries. It can help you determine if a library holds a specific journal issue.

  • USP Pharmacopoeia DI: Volume II Advice for the Lay Patient
    Coverage: . Provides patient-oriented drug information in lay language. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

  • VICTORWeb - UMCES library catalog
    Coverage: current. Books, journals (but not articles!), and other materials in the University System of Maryland, including UMCES. Does not include article databases.

  • Water Resources Abstracts
    Coverage: 1967 - present. Indexes/abstacts water resource literature in journals, books, conference proceedings, and technical reports in the physical and life sciences, engineering, legal and government publications. Formerly Selected Water Resources Abstracts.

  • World Almanac
    Coverage: current. Includes: World Almanac and Book of Facts 1998 ; World Almanac of the U.S.A. ; World Almanac of U.S. Politics ; World Almanac for Kids

  • WorldCat
    Coverage: current. Records of any type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. Includes manuscripts written as early as the 12th century.
